The New Nigeria Peoples Party was founded in 2001. It re-emerged as a significant force under former Kano State Governor and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who joined the party in 2022 after leaving the PDP. In the 2023 elections, NNPP won the Kano governorship (Abba Kabir Yusuf) — one of the most populous states in Nigeria — and Kwankwaso came fourth in the presidential race.
